The pitchers of \u003cem\u003eSarracenia\u003c\/em\u003e ‘Alucard’ resemble those of \u003cem\u003eS. flava\u003c\/em\u003e, but with a slight degree of ruffling that alludes to the presence of Sarracenia leucophylla genes in the mix. The pitchers usually reach a height of around 75 cm (30 inches) but can grow up to 94 cm (37 inches) tall. Under extremely high light the pitchers will turn a deep reddish-black, giving them a striking appearance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs the pitchers age, they turn into a completely velvety black colour. Some pitchers may occasionally display slight green patches on their hoods, but this is not consistent within or between plants. The white background is heavily veined with rich pink or red. These colours intensify with strong sunlight exposure. In his large collection, it sat among plenty of competition. It looked good, just not unusual next to other \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/sarracenia-leucophylla\" title=\"Sarracenia leucophylla\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eSarracenia leucophylla\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e. Then, in 2016, the plant finally showed what it could do. The autumn traps were huge. Close to a metre tall and around ten centimetres wide. It had been stuck overgrowing a pot for years, running out of fresh substrate, yet it still managed that size.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePierre-Emmanuel kindly gave Guillaume Bily a division who eventually nominated it for cultivar status. Once he got it into a fresh mix, it perked up fast and threw up another strong set of autumn pitchers the next year. It held the same look as the original plant and kept growing with the same energy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe name ‘Mont Blanc' feels right. The tall form and clean white areas on the upper pitcher reminded us of the mountain's bright slopes.
