Description of Cyperus papyrus 'Nanus' (Dwarf Papyrus)

Cyperus papyrus 'Nanus' is a dwarf papyrus, a compact version of the classic papyrus look. It gives you umbrella heads on upright stems and works well in pots on pond shelves and in wet bog corners.

Appearance

It forms clumps of straight stems topped with green, radiating bracts that look like little parasols. It usually sits around 60 to 90cm, sometimes a bit taller in warm summers. The overall look is clean and architectural without being bulky.

Care Guide

It needs constant water. It is not a plant for a bog that only stays damp.

  • Sun: Full sun to light shade.
  • Soil: Aquatic compost in a basket or pot, topped with gravel.
  • Water depth: Shallow water over the soil line. Keep the pot permanently wet.
  • Feeding: Aquatic fertiliser tablets help in summer.
  • Overwintering: In colder spots, protect the crown by keeping it frost-free or very sheltered.

In a warm, sheltered pond margin it can look great all season. In cooler gardens it may grow more slowly and stay smaller.

Suitability for Bog Garden

This suits bog gardens when you have a permanently wet zone or a pond shelf. It’s also great in containers because you can move it to the best spot for summer growth.

Use it as a focal point near seating, or as a repeat plant to add consistent height along an edge.
