Sarracenia rubra is also known as the sweet pitcher plant. Its range extends from southern Mississippi, through southern Alabama, northern Florida and Georgia, to the coastal plains of North Carolina and South Carolina.
It is split into six subspecies: Sarracenia rubra subsp. rubra, Sarracenia rubra subsp. jonesii, Sarracenia rubra subsp. gulfensis, Sarracenia rubra subsp. viatorum, Sarracenia rubra subsp. alabamensis and Sarracenia rubra subsp. wherryi.
Many, particularly in the USA consider Sarracenia rubra subsp. jonesii and Sarracenia rubra subsp. alabamensis to be their own species, Sarracenia jonesii and Sarracenia alabamansis respectively. Through this nomenclature, Sarracenia rubra subsp. wherryi is considered to be Sarracenia alabamensis subsp wherryi.
