Plant Description
Dionaea muscipula 'Kim Jong-Il' is an unusual Venus flytrap cultivar selected by Best Carnivorous Plants from a series of distinctive mutations produced around 2015. Unlike giant or heavily coloured cultivars, this clone is valued almost entirely for its unusual trap shape. It remains relatively compact, producing a low, prostrate rosette with traps that appear twisted and irregular throughout the growing season.
The defining feature of Dionaea muscipula 'Kim Jong-Il' is its distorted traps. Rather than forming neat, symmetrical lobes, the traps are heavily curved with wavy margins that give each one a slightly different appearance. The edges rarely develop evenly, creating a crumpled or ruffled outline that makes the plant stand apart from more conventional Venus flytraps.
The dentition is equally distinctive. The teeth are short, irregular, and unevenly spaced, with many appearing fused, bent, or reduced in size. Instead of forming a regular row around the trap, they follow the distorted edge, adding to the cultivar's unusual appearance. Mature traps often look sculpted rather than naturally symmetrical.
Under strong sunlight, the trap interiors develop rich red colouration that contrasts with the bright green outer lobes and petioles. Although the plant is not especially large, it produces numerous traps that create a dense display of twisted shapes and vivid colours across the rosette.
