Plant Description
Dionaea muscipula 'Red Spider' is an upright Venus flytrap cultivar known for its long, narrow leaves and strong red colouration. It is a vigorous grower that can develop an almost entirely red appearance when grown under the right conditions, although the intensity of the colour can vary through the season.
The growth habit is one of the main features of Dionaea muscipula 'Red Spider'. During spring and early summer, the plant produces tall, upright leaves that lift the traps well above the centre of the rosette. The petioles are particularly long and slender, giving mature plants a tall, open appearance rather than the compact growth seen in many Venus flytrap cultivars.
The traps themselves can reach a good size and are carried at the ends of these elongated leaves. Their interiors develop a strong red colour, surrounded by long, fine cilia. The combination of narrow petioles and long teeth gives the plant the spider-like appearance reflected in its name.
Colouration becomes more impressive with strong light. The trap interiors colour first, developing from orange-red through to a much deeper red. The petioles and outer surfaces of the traps can also become heavily pigmented. Under favourable conditions, established plants can become almost completely red, although some green may remain depending on light levels and the stage of growth.
