Plant Description
Dionaea muscipula 'Spider' is a Venus flytrap cultivar selected by South West Carnivorous Plants more than a decade ago. The plant is known for its unusually long, narrow petioles and upright growth, giving it a shape that looks very different from standard Venus flytrap forms.
The leaves are thin and wiry, often reaching up to 20cm in length while staying only a few millimetres wide. Rather than forming a compact rosette close to the substrate, Dionaea muscipula 'Spider' sends most of its traps upward on tall, slender petioles. Early season growth is especially upright, with the traps held high above the centre of the plant before relaxing slightly later in the year.
The traps themselves stay fairly small compared to the leaf length, though the fine, elongated cilia add to the stretched appearance. In strong light, the traps can develop red interiors while the petioles remain bright green. Mature plants often produce a dense cluster of tall leaves moving in different directions, which gives the cultivar its spider-like look.
Dionaea muscipula 'Spider' rarely produces the short, ground-hugging traps seen in many other Venus flytraps. Nearly all growth is upright, creating a plant with height and movement rather than bulk. The narrow petioles and delicate traps give the clone a lighter appearance, though it is a vigorous grower once established.
