Plant Description

The Dionaea muscipula 'Triton' is a carnivorous plant cultivar that stands out for its unique trap structure. It originated from a collaboration between Sven Leonhardt and Mathias Maier in Germany, who registered it in June 2009. The cultivar's name references King Triton, a character from the animated film The Little Mermaid.

This is a vigorous plant. It produces decumbent leaves that can grow up to 7 cm long. Each leaf bears a trap that reaches nearly 4 cm in length.

The 'Triton' has a very specific appearance. Its trap lobes are broad, but their distal ends are fully fused. This creates a distinctive, broad oval shape rather than the classic clam-shell form. A fringe of marginal lashes runs around the entire trap perimeter. These lashes often fuse together, forming clumps with blunt, obtuse tips. Each trap lobe can carry up to six trigger hairs.

The plant's colouring is predominantly a yellowish-green. The inner surfaces of the traps may develop a faint reddish blush, but only when exposed to direct sunlight. This cultivar offers a clear morphological difference for enthusiasts interested in the diversity of Venus flytraps.

Plant photos above are of our Dionaea muscipula 'Triton' mother plants. Divisions are taken from the mother plants and are planted into 9cm pots to be sold. Division sizes can vary greatly and will always be sent largest first. If you'd like to know the size of a plant before ordering, please feel free to contact us.
