Description of Menyanthes trifoliata (Bogbean)

Menyanthes trifoliata is bogbean, a native plant for pools, ditches, and very wet bog ground. It’s a brilliant choice for pond margins because it flowers well and then makes a clean patch of three-part leaves.

Appearance

It spreads by creeping rhizomes. Leaves have three leaflets, giving a clover-like look but on thicker stalks. In late spring it sends up spikes of white flowers with frilly edges. It usually sits 15 to 30cm above the water.

Care Guide

It needs constant wet. It performs best in shallow water or saturated peat.

  • Sun: Full sun to light shade.
  • Soil: Peaty mud or aquatic compost.
  • Water: Shallow water or permanently saturated soil.
  • Control: It can run. Use a basket if you want to limit spread.
  • Tidy: Remove old foliage in late winter if needed.

It is often happier in a pond shelf than in a bog bed that dries at the surface.

Suitability for Bog Garden

This suits bog gardens with a water zone or a permanently wet hollow. It’s excellent near Sarracenia bogs if you keep it contained.

Avoid planting right beside tiny seedlings because it can creep through them.
