Pond plant baskets are designed to help hobby pond keepers grow healthy pond plants, marginal plants and water lilies with confidence. Made from high-quality, rigid plastic with a reinforced base, these durable aquatic planting baskets provide reliable support and long-lasting performance in all types of ponds, from wildlife and ornamental ponds to koi water features.
The perforated design allows excellent water circulation, helping nutrients and oxygen reach plant roots while preventing soil compaction. This encourages strong, natural growth and makes it easier to maintain clear, balanced pond water. By containing soil and roots, our pond planting baskets also simplify maintenance, repositioning and plant division as your aquatic garden develops.
Available in a wide range of shapes and sizes, aquatic baskets are ideal for everything from small marginal plants to large, established water lilies, helping you create a natural, well-structured and thriving pond.

View full detailsChoose a basket large enough to accommodate the plant's root system and expected growth. Small or slow-growing pond plants can start in smaller baskets, while vigorous marginals and water lilies benefit from larger containers that give their roots more room and reduce how frequently they need repotting.
Finely perforated aquatic baskets may benefit from a suitable liner, particularly when using fine aquatic compost that could otherwise wash out. Hessian or purpose-made aquatic basket liners can help retain the growing medium while still allowing water to circulate around the roots.
Use a specialist aquatic compost or suitable heavy loam. Avoid ordinary lightweight multipurpose compost, which can float out of the basket and release excessive nutrients into the water. Aquatic compost is designed to remain more stable when submerged.
A layer of washed gravel can help hold the compost in place after the basket is submerged. It can also reduce disturbance of the compost by fish. Avoid materials that could significantly alter the chemistry of your pond water.
Aquatic baskets make pond plants easier to position at the correct water depth and easier to lift for maintenance, division or repotting. They can also help restrict vigorous root systems and reduce unwanted spreading through a lined pond.
The best wildlife pond plants provide a mixture of underwater cover, surface shade, flowering habitat and places for aquatic insects to emerge. A balanced pond can include oxygenating plants, marginal plants and floating-leaved plants such as water lilies. Native species are particularly useful for supporting UK pond wildlife.
