Plant Description

Dionaea muscipula 'Akai Ryu' is a well-known clone of Venus flytrap. Its name, 'Akai Ryu', translates from Japanese as 'Red Dragon'. This name refers directly to the plant's defining characteristic.

The 'Akai Ryu' exhibits a deep burgundy to dark maroon colouration. This affects the entire plant. The leaf petiole, blade, and trap all show this pigmentation. The entire trap, both its interior and exterior surfaces, maintains this dark burgundy hue throughout the year.

Some green may appear around the plant's centre during mid-winter. Even when grown under laboratory conditions with higher nutrient levels, the plant still shows partial burgundy colouration. Its growth habit and flowers are typical of the species.

Plant photos above are of our Dionaea muscipula 'Akai Ryu' mother plants. Divisions are taken from the mother plants and are planted into 9cm pots to be sold. Division sizes can vary greatly and will always be sent largest first. If you'd like to know the size of a plant before ordering, please feel free to contact us.
