Dionaea muscipula 'Alien'

Plant Description

The Venus flytrap Dionaea muscipula 'Alien' is a unique cultivar that originated with Czech collector Gregor Bily. Its name comes directly from its bizarre appearance, which brings to mind the creature from the Alien film franchise.

The plant's most notable feature is its highly arched trap shape. On a mature plant, these traps can reach 4 to 5 cm. The base lobes of the traps overlap, and the distal ends are fused. The traps are so heavy that they often fail to close properly. Attempting to force them shut by hand can cause damage.

Its teeth add to the unusual look. They are shorter than those found on typical Venus flytraps. Each tooth also has small wings along its length. Inside the trap, you will find a high number of tiny trigger hairs.

This distinct structure sets 'Alien' apart from other cultivars. Its morphology is its main point of interest for collectors.
