Plant Description

The Venus flytrap cultivar Dionaea muscipula 'Fangzahn' originated in Germany in 2009. Its name translates from German as "fang tooth". This name directly refers to the plant's most prominent feature.

The cultivar sets itself apart with its exceptionally long marginal lashes. These are the stiff, hair-like projections on the edge of each trap. On 'Fangzahn', these lashes can grow up to 1.6 cm long. They emerge from traps that measure up to 3.6 cm in length. This combination creates a formidable and highly distinctive appearance.

The plant exhibits strong, vigorous growth. During the summer months, it produces long, tall foliage. Its colouration is variable. The interior surfaces of the traps and the long lashes often show shades of pink, red, or maroon. The exterior of the trap lobes and the rest of the foliage typically remain a yellowish-green. A red line frequently marks the exterior of the traps just below the lobe margins.

Dr E. Koenig produced this cultivar.
