Plant Description

Dionaea muscipula 'Great White Shark' is a giant Venus flytrap bred in England by Alistair and Jenny Pearce at Southwest Carnivorous Plants. The plant comes from a cross between 'South West Giant' and 'Shark Tooth'. The goal was to combine the trap size and vigour of 'South West Giant' with the unusual teeth of 'Shark Tooth'.

The result is a large and upright cultivar with a strong growth habit. Mature plants produce broad traps that can reach the size expected from giant forms. These traps sit on sturdy leaves and hold themselves well above the centre of the plant during the main growing season.

The defining feature of Dionaea muscipula 'Great White Shark' is the trap margin. Instead of long needle-like cilia, the traps develop short triangular teeth. They are thick, irregular, and widely spaced. The shape closely resembles the dentate margins seen in 'Shark Tooth'. This feature becomes more pronounced on mature summer traps.

The trap interior colours well in strong light. Many plants develop a bright red inner surface while the outer trap remains green. The contrast highlights the jagged teeth and gives the traps a very bold appearance.

Growth is vigorous. The plant builds size quickly and forms a chunky rosette over time. Its structure and trap size reflect the influence of 'South West Giant', while the dentate teeth clearly show the genetics of 'Shark Tooth'.
