Plant Description
Dionaea muscipula 'Rouge Sombre' is a Venus flytrap cultivar prized for its exceptionally dark colouration. The plant grows with a compact, prostrate habit, producing broad, chunky traps that sit close to the centre of the rosette. As the season progresses, it develops some of the richest burgundy and purple-red tones found in any Venus flytrap.
Newly opened traps often emerge with bright yellow-green margins that contrast strongly with the developing red interiors. As the traps mature and receive plenty of direct sunlight, almost every part of the trap gradually becomes suffused with a deep reddish-purple colour. Fully coloured traps can appear almost entirely dark, with only the enlarged leaf bases retaining their yellow-green colouring.
The traps are framed by long, fine cilia that provide an elegant contrast to the broad, heavily coloured lobes. This combination of slender teeth and chunky traps gives Dionaea muscipula 'Rouge Sombre' a refined appearance that differs from many other dark red cultivars with heavier dentition.
The plant produces a dense display of colourful traps throughout the growing season. Its low-growing habit allows the dark traps to overlap, creating an impressive mass of rich red and purple tones. The gradual change from yellow-green on fresh growth to almost solid dark red on mature traps adds further interest as the season progresses.
