Dionaea muscipula 'South West Giant'

Plant Description

Dionaea muscipula 'South West Giant' is a Venus flytrap cultivar developed by British grower Alistair Pearce during the 1980s. He named the plant after his nursery, South West Carnivorous Plants. The 'Giant' part of its name refers directly to the plant's substantial foliage.

This cultivar produces notably large leaves. These can reach up to 15 cm in length. Each leaf ends in a formidable trap that grows up to 5 cm long. The traps exhibit a strong, curved shape. In the summer, you will notice the leaf bases become especially long and narrow.

Its colouration changes with light exposure. In strong sunlight, the trap interiors and their margins develop a deep red suffusion. The rest of the plant's foliage maintains a yellowish-green hue. This creates a clear visual contrast on a mature plant.
