Plant Description

Dionaea muscipula 'Triffid Giant' is a large-growing Venus flytrap cultivar selected for its overall size and vigorous growth. It produces longer leaves and larger traps than a typical form, creating an open rosette that can become particularly impressive once the plant reaches maturity.

The traps are the main feature of Dionaea muscipula 'Triffid Giant'. They are broad and well proportioned, with long, slender cilia arranged around the margins. The teeth remain fairly typical in shape rather than showing the mutations found in dentate or sawtooth cultivars. Their length helps emphasise the size of the traps when fully open.

Colouration varies with light levels and the age of each trap. Fresh growth is predominantly bright yellow-green to green. The inner surfaces then develop shades of orange and red, particularly when the plant receives plenty of direct sunlight. Mature traps can show a deep red centre surrounded by a contrasting green margin, while the petioles usually retain much of their green colouring.

'Triffid Giant' produces relatively long leaves, giving the traps plenty of separation within the rosette. During periods of strong active growth, these leaves can become more upright, lifting the traps above the older growth. This makes its size particularly noticeable compared with more compact Venus flytrap clones.
