Description of Nymphaea 'Inner Light'

Nymphaea 'Inner Light' is a hardy water lily that suits deeper water and larger ponds. It grows from a rhizome in a basket and sends long stems to the surface, so it copes well where shallow-water cultivars struggle. The plant flowers through summer and brings warm yellow to peach tones that show up clearly across the pond.

Appearance

Flowers open by day from June to September and often look peachy yellow, sometimes edging toward apricot in hot spells. Many growers report a light fragrance. Individual blooms can reach around 15–20cm across in good conditions. Leaves start with some darker mottling and mature to brighter green. This cultivar can spread widely, with established plants often covering roughly 1.5m or more across the surface, and sometimes more where water stays warm and feeding stays regular.

Plant Nymphaea 'Inner Light' where the water stays calm and the site gets full sun. Use a large basket with heavy aquatic compost and top with washed gravel. Because it handles depth, you can place it within a broad range, around 30–90cm of water above the pot. If you plant in spring, start it nearer the shallower end and lower it gradually as pads strengthen, otherwise early growth can stall. Feed with aquatic fertiliser tablets during the growing season and remove old leaves so light reaches the crown. If you need to repot, do it in late spring and keep the growing tip near the basket edge.

Suitability for Garden Ponds

In a garden pond, Nymphaea 'Inner Light' suits medium to large water where you want a lily that can sit deeper. Its pad cover gives strong shade for fish and creates cooler water underneath in summer. It also provides platforms for pond insects. Because it spreads widely, it does not suit a tiny pond or patio tub. Give it a defined zone and avoid planting another large-spreading lily nearby, otherwise you lose open water and reduce flowering.
