Description of Iris ensata 'Ruby King'

Iris ensata 'Ruby King' is a Japanese iris cultivar grown for rich ruby-purple flowers. It thrives in wet, fertile soil and is one of the best irises for bog gardens with reliable summer colour.

Appearance

It forms upright fans of narrow green leaves. In early to mid summer, tall stems carry large flat flowers in deep reddish purple tones with contrasting markings. Height is often 70 to 100cm in flower.

Care Guide

Consistent moisture during spring and early summer is key for strong bud formation.

  • Sun: Full sun for best flowering.
  • Soil: Humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil.
  • Water: Keep constantly moist in spring and early summer.
  • Feeding: A spring feed helps flowering.
  • Division: Divide in spring every few years.

Avoid letting the crown dry out while buds are forming.

Suitability for Bog Garden

This iris is perfect for bog gardens and pond edges where soil stays wet. It works well planted in groups for a bold block of colour.

Position it mid to back of the bed so flowers rise above lower foliage.
