Description of Iris 'Kimboshi'

Iris 'Kimboshi' is sold as a tough yellow iris for wet ground and pond margins. Many plants in this group are linked with Iris pseudacorus, so you may see it described as a type of yellow flag hybrid. It’s grown for bright early summer flowers and upright foliage.

Appearance

It forms fans of sword-like leaves and sends up flower stems that often sit around 70 to 100cm. Flowers are yellow and held above the leaves, making it easy to spot across the pond edge.

Care Guide

Grow it in sun with wet feet and it will get on with the job.

  • Sun: Full sun for best flowering.
  • Soil: Heavy, fertile soil or aquatic compost.
  • Water: Saturated bog soil or shallow water around the roots.
  • Tidy up: Remove spent stems and trim torn leaves.
  • Division: Divide in spring every few years if clumps get crowded.

Keep the crown in wet ground through late spring for the best bloom display.

Suitability for Bog Garden

This iris is useful in bog gardens because it gives height and flowers with little effort. It also works as a light screen at the margin, giving cover for wildlife.

Place it behind lower plants so it doesn’t shade them. In liner bogs, baskets make dividing much easier.
