Description

Sarracenia flava f. viridescens 'Suspicion' is a well-known, all-green clone of Sarracenia flava that stands out in any collection. The only named plant of this form, 'Suspicion' was grown from seed by UK grower Stephen Locke from a self-pollinated plant acquired from Adrian Slack in the 1980's.

Sarracenia flava f. viridescens may initially give the impression of being a Sarracenia flava var. maxima, however, it becomes evident that this plant is, in fact, an anthocyanin-free clone of Sarracenia flava, completely lacking all red colouration induced by anthocyanin. Additionally, unlike other Sarracenia flavaSarracenia flava f. viridescens does not exhibit red discolouration when damaged.

The slender and graceful pitchers display a vibrant apple green hue when fresh, gradually transitioning to a lemon yellow as the growing season progresses. The sulfur-yellow flowers align with the characteristics typical of the species.

The name 'Suspicion' is derived from an allusion to envy, often symbolized by the colour green.

Basic Care

Sarracenia plants are incredibly easy to care for, given the correct conditions. An unheated greenhouse is an ideal location for Sarracenia, they can be grown outside in the UK but a greenhouse provides a longer growing season. Here are the 3 golden rules for healthy Sarracenia.

  1. Provide as much sun as possible.
  2. Keep their pots sat in 1-2cm of rainwater.
  3. Use acidic soil. A 1:1 peat moss & perlite mix is typical but you can also research peat-free alternatives.
