Description of Sarracenia leucophylla 'Bocaza'

Sarracenia leucophylla 'Bocaza' is a giant cultivar of Sarracenia leucophylla. Its name comes from a Spanish term for 'wide mouth' or 'big mouth'. This references the plant's most prominent feature.

The cultivar's exact origins are not fully documented. It entered wider cultivation through UK grower Ian Salter. He acquired a division from a local grower many years ago. That original plant was reportedly used for natural fly control in a tomato greenhouse. Its potential for spectacular pitchers was not immediately recognised. The genetic background is presumed to be primarily Sarracenia leucophylla, though a hybrid origin is possible.

This plant is known for its impressive size. Its spring pitchers can reach heights of 120 cm. The hood flares open to form a very wide, open mouth. Colouration is a dramatic combination of white and pink. The white background is heavily veined with rich pink or red. These colours intensify with strong sunlight exposure. The 'Bocaza' produces these large, colourful pitchers from spring into autumn, although the best are usually produced in spring.

Plant photos above are of our Sarracenia leucophylla 'Bocaza' mother plants. Divisions are taken from the mother plants and are planted into 9cm pots to be sold. Division sizes can vary greatly and will always be sent largest first. If you'd like to know the size of a plant before ordering, please feel free to contact us.

Basic Sarracenia Care

Sarracenia leucophylla 'Bocaza' is easy to care for, given the correct conditions. An unheated greenhouse is an ideal location. Here are the 3 golden rules for healthy Sarracenia pitcher plants.

  1. Provide as much sun as possible.
  2. Keep their pots sat in 1-2cm of rainwater.
  3. Use acidic soil. A 1:1 peat moss & perlite mix is typical.
