Description of Nymphaea 'White Gladstoniana'

Nymphaea 'Gladstoniana' is a very large hardy white water lily bred for big ponds and lakes. It grows from a rhizome and builds a broad carpet of floating pads before pushing up large white flowers through summer. Your list calls it White Gladstoniana, but it is normally sold simply as Gladstoniana. It is not a “little pond” lily, so it works best when you treat it like a centrepiece plant with space to spread.

Appearance

Gladstoniana makes large, bright green to deep green pads and can create heavy surface cover once it is established. Several suppliers describe it as a big grower with a spread in the 90–180 cm range. The flowers are white with a golden centre and are described as very large and showy. Some growers compare the overall effect to a more free-flowering alternative to Nymphaea alba in a managed pond. Because the plant is big, the flowers do not look oversized, they look in proportion to the wide leaf raft.

Care Guide

Plant Gladstoniana only where you have depth and surface room. Use a large aquatic basket or planting container with heavy loam based compost and a thick gravel cap. Position it in full sun in still water. Because it is often grown in deeper water than smaller cultivars, lower it gradually, then settle it into a deeper final position once it is making strong leaves. Many UK suppliers give a depth range around 50–150 cm of water over the crown, with the deeper end suiting large ponds where the plant can stretch without stress. Feed well through summer with aquatic fertiliser tablets, as a big lily needs steady nutrients. Remove old pads when they yellow and clear away spent flowers. Over winter, leave it undisturbed in deep water.

Suitability for Garden Ponds

This is a lily for big water. In a large pond it gives excellent shade and shelter for fish and amphibians, and it can help check algae by reducing light. In a small pond it will quickly feel crowded, and the surface can become almost fully covered. If you want the classic white-lily look but you only have a small pond, choose a compact white instead and keep Gladstoniana for larger sites where it can do its job properly. In ponds with fish, a firm gravel cap keeps compost in place around Nymphaea 'Gladstoniana' and helps the plant settle. Leave a patch of open water beside Nymphaea 'Gladstoniana' so you can actually see the flowers when they open.
