Plant Description

The Dionaea 'A2' is a specific cultivar with a direct link to one of the most famous giant venus flytraps. Henning von Schmeling created this plant in the early 2000s. It originated from a group of seven seedlings. These seedlings came from the self-pollination of a plant he called 'Carolina Giant'.

He named these seedlings in order of size, from largest to smallest. The 'A1' seedling later became the well-known Dionaea muscipula 'B52'. This makes the 'A2' a sibling plant to the 'B52'.

The 'A2' is a large plant. Its traps can grow up to 5.5 cm long. This places it among the biggest Venus flytrap cultivars. The plant has a low-growing habit. It produces decumbent leaves and traps all year.

With strong sunlight in late summer and autumn, the trap interiors develop a deep red colour.

Plant photos above are of our Dionaea muscipula 'A2' mother plants. Divisions are taken from the mother plants and are planted into 9cm pots to be sold. Division sizes can vary greatly and will always be sent largest first. If you'd like to know the size of a plant before ordering, please feel free to contact us.

Basic Dionaea Care

Dionaea muscipula 'A2' is easy to care for, given the correct conditions. An unheated greenhouse is an ideal location. Here are the 3 golden rules for healthy Venus flytraps.

  1. Provide as much sun as possible.
  2. Keep their pots sat in 1-2cm of rainwater.
  3. Use acidic soil. A 1:1 peat moss & perlite mix is typical.
