Plant Description

Dionaea muscipula 'Darwin' is a giant Venus flytrap selected in England at Southwest Carnivorous Plants. It comes from a cross between Dionaea muscipula 'South West Giant' and 'Dingleys Big Vigorous'. The aim was clear. Combine very large traps with a plant that keeps a tighter, more manageable shape.

The result is a compact but heavy-growing clone. It produces traps up to 5 cm across, matching the size of 'South West Giant'. At the same time, the petioles stay shorter. The plant sits lower and looks denser in a pot. This balance makes Dionaea muscipula 'Darwin' easier to grow in standard containers without the sprawling habit some giants develop.

Growth is fast. The plant divides readily and forms a thick clump within a few seasons. In a larger pot, it builds into a solid specimen with dozens of upright traps. During summer, the traps rise on longer leaf stalks and colour well in strong sun. The interior flushes red when grown in full light.

This cultivar gained attention when it won the largest trap competition on the CPUK forum, with traps measuring 5 cm. It was also used by the BBC during filming for the series 'Life', chosen for its scale and presence on camera.

Plant photos above are of our Dionaea muscipula 'Darwin' mother plants. Divisions are taken from the mother plants and are planted into 9cm pots to be sold. Division sizes can vary greatly and will always be sent largest first. If you'd like to know the size of a plant before ordering, please feel free to contact us.
