Plant Description
Dionaea muscipula 'South West Giant' × 'Sawtooth' is a cultivar cross that combines two well-known traits. It brings together the large trap size of Dionaea muscipula 'South West Giant' with the dentate, saw-like teeth of Dionaea muscipula 'Sawtooth'.
The plant grows with a strong, upright habit. Leaves are long and sturdy, lifting the traps above the centre of the rosette during active growth. This gives the plant a more open structure compared with low-growing forms.
Trap size is one of the main features. Mature plants produce broad traps that approach the scale seen in giant cultivars. The traps are supported on thick petioles and hold their shape well through the season.
The marginal teeth show clear influence from 'Sawtooth'. Instead of long, thin cilia, the traps develop short, triangular teeth. These teeth are more evenly spaced than in some dentate forms and create a serrated edge along the trap margin. On mature summer traps, this feature becomes more defined.
Colour develops with good light. The outer trap remains green, while the interior can take on red tones, often strongest towards the centre. This contrast highlights both the size of the trap and the tooth structure.
Growth is steady and reliable. The plant increases in size each season and forms a solid clump over time. Dionaea muscipula 'South West Giant' × 'Sawtooth' shows a clear mix of both parents, combining large trap proportions with a consistent dentate edge.
