Description of Sarracenia alata var. atrorubra - Orange/ Pink (Jackson County, Mississippi)

This particular clone of the Sarracenia alata var. atrorubra is quite different. It originated from wild-collected seed in Jackson County, Mississippi, over two decades ago. The carnivorous plant expert Nigel Hewitt-Cooper cultivated and selected this unique clone for its unusual colouration.

The plant's shape is a classic example of Sarracenia alata. It produces tall, slender pitchers with a prominent, flared hood. Its defining characteristic is its unusual pitcher colour. In strong, direct sunlight, the typically green and yellow pitchers develop a pronounced blush. This flush is a distinctive orange-pink hue. This colour is not commonly seen in other forms of the species, making this clone a notable exception.

This variety is a beautiful example of the species from its specific coastal Mississippi locale. Its growth habits and structure remain true to its wild origins. The unique colour provides a point of difference amongst other pale pitcher plants in cultivation.
