Description of Sarracenia × catesbaei
This Sarracenia × catesbaei, originally from Nigel Hewitt-Cooper, is a selected form of the natural hybrid between Sarracenia flava and Sarracenia purpurea. This clone shows an influence from the flava parent, particularly in its height and more upright growth, while still retaining the thicker build typical of purpurea.
Pitchers are medium to tall in height, with a solid, slightly flared tube. The structure is firm, holding its shape well through the season. Compared to lower-growing forms of × catesbaei, this clone stands more upright, with a narrower base and a more defined neck leading into the mouth.
Colour is dominated by deep red tones. Mature pitchers often develop a near solid red across the tube and lid, with only faint veining visible beneath the surface. The throat area can appear slightly darker, forming a subtle central patch rather than a sharply defined marking.
The lid is broad and held forward, with a smooth to slightly undulating edge. It does not fully cover the opening, allowing water to collect inside the trap, a clear trait inherited from purpurea. The rim is thick and rounded, often matching the deep red of the rest of the pitcher.
Plant photos above are of our Sarracenia × catesbaei mother plants. Divisions are taken from the mother plants and are planted into 9cm pots to be sold. Division sizes can vary greatly and will always be sent largest first. If you'd like to know the size of a plant before ordering, please feel free to contact us.
