Description of Sarracenia × farnhamii
Sarracenia × farnhamii is a natural hybrid between Sarracenia leucophylla and Sarracenia rubra. It combines the tall, flared pitchers of leucophylla with the finer structure and veining influence of rubra.
The plant produces upright trumpet-shaped pitchers that can reach a good height when mature. The tubes are slender but firm, widening towards the top where the hood flares outward. This flared lid is a key feature of Sarracenia × farnhamii, often showing a ruffled or slightly undulating edge.
Colour and pattern are prominent. The upper portion of the pitcher displays strong red veining over a lighter background, often yellow to pale green. In many forms, the hood and upper tube show contrasting white or lightly coloured areas, inherited from Sarracenia leucophylla. The veining can be dense, forming a network across the surface.
The throat and lid area tend to develop the strongest colour, with deep red tones concentrated around the opening. This creates a clear visual contrast between the top and lower tube.
Growth follows a typical seasonal pattern. The plant produces its main pitchers during the growing season, with the tallest and most colourful traps appearing in late summer to early autumn.
