Description of Sarracenia flava var. atropurpurea 'Waccamaw' (Green Swamp, North Carolina)

Sarracenia flava var. atropurpurea 'Waccamaw' is a stunning Sarracenia flava var. atropurpurea from North Carolina’s Green Swamp. It has the classic traits of the red-pitchered flava types found along the east coast, growing tall, elegant traps after its spring flowers, but it's better than virtually all of them (our opinion)!

In good light, the pitchers turn a deep red, even red all over, while the inside stays bright yellow at first, with bold red veins. There’s a thick red stripe down the front, and the veins spread up into the hood. By summer, the yellow parts start blushing red too. Even its non-carnivorous winter leaves (phyllodia) catch a reddish tint in strong sun.

This one’s a steady grower, splitting at the rhizome to form strong clumps with multiple pitchers. If you like Sarracenia flava with stand-out colour, ‘Waccamaw’ is THE pick, true to its wild roots but easy in cultivation.
