Description of Sarracenia flava var. ornata - Lidless Form
This lidless form of Sarracenia flava var. ornata is an unusual variation of the ornate yellow pitcher plant. Unlike typical Sarracenia flava, which produces a large hood above each pitcher opening, this form develops traps with the lid greatly reduced or absent. It is a scarce plant in UK collections, with relatively few divisions available.
The pitchers retain much of the upright, tubular structure associated with Sarracenia flava var. ornata. They are predominantly green to yellow-green, crossed by fine red to brown veins that run vertically along the tube. These markings become more concentrated towards the upper section, where the characteristic ornata pattern is most apparent.
The defining feature is the unusual pitcher opening. Instead of supporting the broad, overhanging lid normally associated with Sarracenia flava, the upper pitcher develops without a fully formed hood. This leaves the mouth more exposed and gives the trap a very different appearance from conventional forms. The reduced lid also makes the structure of the throat and pitcher opening easier to see.
Growth is generally slower and less vigorous than in typical Sarracenia flava var. ornata. Mature plants tend to remain smaller, producing shorter pitchers and developing into substantial clumps more slowly. This reduced vigour is a characteristic of the form rather than simply a result of growing conditions.
Despite its unusual pitcher development, the plant retains the seasonal growth cycle of Sarracenia flava, producing its main pitchers during spring and early summer.
