Description of Sarracenia flava var. rugelii 'Maxima' - Bruce Bednar Clone

Sarracenia flava var. rugelii 'Maxima' is a vigorous and elegant form of Sarracenia flava, selected by Bruce Bednar from Lee's Botanical Gardens. Despite its name, this clone is a form of Sarracenia flava var. rugelii and should not be confused with Sarracenia flava 'Maxima' or Sarracenia flava var. maxima, both of which are distinct plants.

This clone produces tall, robust pitchers with a fresh lime-green body and very little overall veining, giving the plant a clean and refined appearance. The broad, slightly arching lid is one of its standout features, adding impressive stature to each trap.

True to its rugelii heritage, the throat displays a sharply defined dark maroon blotch against an otherwise green interior. This bold throat patch is crisp and uncluttered, drawing the eye immediately and providing a striking contrast with the surrounding lime-green pitcher. The restrained colouration elsewhere allows this feature to remain the centrepiece throughout the growing season.

In spring, mature plants produce impressive upright pitchers that create a bold architectural display. The uncluttered colouring and large lid give the plant an elegant appearance, making it an excellent choice for collectors who appreciate the classic beauty of green flavas with strong throat markings.
