Description of Sarracenia 'Manta Ray'

Sarracenia 'Manta Ray' is a distinctive Sarracenia cultivar prized for its unique form. Its exact genetic lineage is not widely published, making its origins a topic for discussion. However, it wouldn't be too controversial to suggest that Sarracenia purpurea is part of the family tree.

This plant is instantly recognised by its unusual pitchers. They do not grow bolt upright like many other Sarracenia. Instead, they form curved pitchers with a flambuoyant hood. Each pitcher develops a wide, rounded head. The hood curves upwards at the edges, perfectly mimicking a manta ray's pectoral fins.

Colouration is typically a vibrant green. This is overlain with a network of crimson or deep purple veins. Exposure to full sun encourages the richest pigmentation.

Plant photos above are of our Sarracenia 'Manta Ray' mother plants. Divisions are taken from the mother plants and are planted into 9cm pots to be sold. Division sizes can vary greatly and will always be sent largest first. If you'd like to know the size of a plant before ordering, please feel free to contact us.

Basic Sarracenia Care

Sarracenia 'Manta Ray' is easy to care for, given the correct conditions. An unheated greenhouse is an ideal location. Here are the 3 golden rules for healthy Sarracenia pitcher plants.

  1. Provide as much sun as possible.
  2. Keep their pots sat in 1-2cm of rainwater.
  3. Use acidic soil. A 1:1 peat moss & perlite mix is typical.
