Description of Sarracenia × moorei 'Joanna'
Sarracenia × moorei 'Joanna' is a beautiful Sarracenia hybrid combining Sarracenia flava var. rugelii with Sarracenia leucophylla to make a . Created by Andy Bullock in 2005, this Sarracenia × moorei is recorded in Mike King's collection as H169 MK.
'Joanna' produces tall, upright pitchers that show an excellent balance of characteristics from both parents. The lower tube begins predominantly yellow-green, but is covered with an increasingly dense network of red to burgundy veins towards the upper pitcher. Pale cream and white areas become much more prominent around the mouth and hood, reflecting the strong Sarracenia leucophylla influence.
The real highlight is the dramatic upper section of each pitcher. The large, upright hood develops a dense network of dark burgundy-red veins surrounding numerous contrasting white windows. As the season progresses and the pitchers colour under strong light, the throat becomes heavily suffused with deep red. A particularly prominent dark throat splotch sits beneath the hood and can spread across much of the neck, producing an intense block of colour above the paler pitcher tube.
The lip also develops a rich red to burgundy colour, neatly framing the pitcher opening and tying together the markings of the tube, throat and hood. Mature pitchers can become particularly impressive when viewed in strong sunlight, which brings out the contrast between the pale windows and dark pigmentation.
Sarracenia × moorei 'Joanna' is a superb collector's plant with strong growth and exceptionally attractive pitchers. Its combination of flava-influenced stature, heavily patterned leucophylla-style hood and distinctive dark throat makes this Andy Bullock creation immediately recognisable when at its best.
