Description of Sarracenia purpurea 'Sorrow'

Sarracenia purpurea 'Sorrow' is a unique cultivar with striking pigmentation differences from typical Sarracenia purpurea subsp. purpurea. It originated from a batch of seeds obtained in Miami, USA, and sown in 1979 at the Botanic Gardens Liberec, Czech Republic. Among the seedlings, botanist Miloslav Studnička identified a partially albinotic mutant, which he selected for its cultivar potential.

The plant shares the same morphology as wild Sarracenia purpurea, but its colouration sets it apart. The pitchers are pale green, turning yellowish in strong sunlight. A distinctive purple cross marks the inner surface of the lid, just above the pitcher opening. The flowers are creamy white, with a faint pink hue in their juvenile stage.

Sarracenia purpurea 'Sorrow' grows slowly, making it a rarity for dedicated collectors. The cultivar’s name reflects personal significance; Studnička named it in memory of his late son, with the red cross and pure flowers symbolising sorrow and remembrance.
