Description of Sarracenia purpurea subsp. venosa var. burkii 'Chipola Giant' (Chipola River, Florida)

Sarracenia purpurea 'Chipola Giant' is a name given to a few clones of giant Sarracenia purpurea subsp. venosa var. burkii (Sarracenia rosea) originating from a single location along the Chipola River in Florida.

The plant forms a low, ground-hugging rosette. Its pitchers are exceptionally large and broad. The pitchers have a stout, robust appearance. They hold their shape well throughout the growing season.

The colouration of mature pitchers is a deep, solid maroon-red. This deep hue covers the entire pitcher, both inside and out. The venation is heavy and prominent, creating a textured look. The lid, or operculum, is wide and often has a slightly wavy edge.

This clone is a vigorous grower. It multiplies steadily to form a dense clump. It retains its impressive size and rich colour even in cultivation. It is a great example of the diversity found within the Sarracenia purpurea species.
