Description of Sarracenia 'Reptilian Rose'

Sarracenia 'Reptilian Rose' is a hybrid of Sarracenia oreophila, Sarracenia flava, and Sarracenia leucophylla. Its name comes from the lizard-skin-like veining on the throat and inner hood, along with the rose-pink colour of mature pitchers. The pitchers reach 70-85 cm in height, with early spring growth being the largest and most vividly coloured.

Heavy venation, inherited from its Sarracenia oreophila 'Sand Mountain' parent, appears as the pitchers develop, later fading into an overall pinkish-rose hue. The nectar roll often puckers, creating a fanged effect. In autumn, the plant produces curved phyllodia similar to those of S. oreophila.

The flowers open bright yellow with red markings at the base, turning apricot-orange within a week. Some blooms form with three or four parts instead of five, though they remain fertile. This cultivar combines striking reptilian patterning with strong growth, making it a distinctive addition to any collection.

Basic Sarracenia Care

Sarracenia 'Reptilian Rose' is easy to care for, given the correct conditions. An unheated greenhouse is an ideal location. Here are the 3 golden rules for healthy Sarracenia pitcher plants.

  1. Provide as much sun as possible.
  2. Keep their pots sat in 1-2cm of rainwater.
  3. Use acidic soil. A 1:1 peat moss & perlite mix is typical.
