Description of Sarracenia × moorei 'Royal Ruby'

Sarracenia 'Royal Ruby' is a striking natural hybrid of Sarracenia × moorei (Sarracenia flava X Sarracenia leucophylla), originally discovered in northern Florida in the 1990s. This cultivar is particularly admired for its vivid colouration. Even in the early stages of growth, the pitchers exhibit a noticeable pink blush, which intensifies as they mature. The lower sections of the pitchers develop a rich olive-green hue, while the upper portions take on a radiant raspberry-red tone, creating a striking contrast. The effect is almost luminous, giving the impression that clusters of pitchers emit a soft glow.

The influence of S. leucophylla is evident in the ruffled, ornate shape of the hood, as well as in the delicate fenestrations near the pitcher's upper regions. Pitchers of S. 'Royal Ruby' generally reach heights of up to 90cm, though taller pitchers have been recorded. Its flowers are two-toned, with deep red petals fading to warm orange-yellow at the tips.

Named 'Royal Ruby' in May 2004, inspired by its majestic appearance and the deep, gem-like red tones reminiscent of rubies. Prior to this, it was known as S. × moorei 'Big Red'.
