Description of Sarracenia 'Saxapahaw'

The parentage of Sarracenia 'Saxapahaw' is a mystery, though its characteristics suggest ancestry from Sarracenia flava var. atropurpurea and Sarracenia leucophylla. The plant is named after a Native American tribe from North Carolina's Haw River region.

In spring, Sarracenia 'Saxapahaw' produces reddish pitchers. Their tips show 2-4 cm of blended bright yellow colouration. The open pitchers reveal pale yellow interiors. These are marked with distinct red veining patterns under the hood. The outer pitcher surfaces feature pink speckling.

An established plant grows tall pitchers up to 70 cm. These pitchers darken throughout the summer. They transition to a deep burgundy. Their peristomes, 6-8 cm wide, change from burgundy to a reddish brown in bright sun. Pitchers may exceed recorded sizes in optimal light when left undivided for several seasons.

The flowers are a dark red, similar to S. leucophylla. Each petal has pale blotches of yellow.
