Description of Sarracenia × soperi (alata - Red Lid X flava var. ornata) MK-H17
Sarracenia × soperi (Sarracenia alata – Red Lid X Sarracenia flava var. ornata) is a classic hybrid by Adrian Slack. It combines the upright structure of Sarracenia flava with the influence of a red-lidded Sarracenia alata, resulting in a vigorous plant with consistent growth and clear colour definition.
Pitchers grow tall and straight, with a narrow base that gradually widens towards the mouth. The tube is predominantly yellow-green, overlaid with strong red veining inherited from Sarracenia flava var. ornata. This veining becomes denser towards the upper section, giving the tube a layered appearance without obscuring the base colour.
The lid and throat carry the strongest pigmentation. The throat patch develops a deep red tone that spreads into the upper tube, while the lid takes on a solid red wash or heavy suffusion. This creates a clear contrast with the lighter tube below. The lid is held open and slightly forward, with a smooth edge and a broad surface.
Growth is steady through the main season, with pitchers maintaining height and structure even in mixed conditions. The hybrid shows good vigour, producing multiple traps that hold their shape well over time. In full sun, the red tones intensify while the yellow base remains clear.
In spring, the plant produces tall flower scapes bearing large yellow flowers, typical of its flava parentage. These are held well above the pitchers and add to the overall display early in the season.
