Description of Sarracenia 'Troll'

Sarracenia 'Troll' is a striking cultivar with robust, upright pitchers that superficially resemble Sarracenia flava, but with a much heavier build. In fact, it was selected and grown on from a tray of seedlings marked as selfed Sarracenia flava var. atropurpurea by Stephen Morely

Mature pitchers can reach 80 cm tall with a wide, thick peristome and a deep mouth up to 8 cm across. The pitchers open green and rapidly deepen to a dark purple-red. Their form is often slightly distorted, with a crinkled tube and a characterful tilt to the lid. 'Troll' is supported by a vigorous rhizome and produces red flowers, suggesting that flava may not be its sole ancestor. It most likely has a Sarracenia leucophylla influencing its genetics due to its flowers resembling those of Sarracenia × moorei.

'Troll' is a fantastic plant on its own merit, but also provides great value as a parent plant in breeding projects.
