Description of Sarracenia × moorei H404 (Pensacola Field, Florida)
Sarracenia × moorei H404 (Pensacola Field, Florida) is a seed-grown selected Sarracenia × moorei by Matt Soper, and it's a beauty! Grown from seed from the Gulf Coast in Florida from wild populations where Sarracenia flava and Sarracenia leucophylla naturally hybridise. Selected for size and overall appearance, H404 is referred to as a Pensacola fields select giant.
Pitchers are tall and slender, with a long, tapering tube that maintains a clean, upright habit. The structure is strongly influenced by flava, giving the plant height and a narrow base, while the upper section shows clear leucophylla traits. Mature traps can reach notable size, standing well above surrounding plants.
Colouration is relatively restrained in the tube, which remains a clear green with fine, pale veining. The upper section and lid develop a lighter tone, often approaching a soft white or pale green depending on light levels. This creates a clean transition from base to top without heavy pigmentation across the body.
The throat patch is the main area of contrast. It forms a strong vertical red marking beneath the lid, sometimes appearing as a concentrated splash that runs down into the tube. The lid itself is broad and slightly ruffled, held open to expose the throat and upper pitcher.
Growth can be slower than some moorei, but it's worth the wait!
